Name: Anorthosite
Type: rock
Class: Igneous
Subclass: Mafic
Particle Size: Fine
Sample No.: Anorthos_H1
Owner: JHU

Origin: from near Elizabethtown, Essex County, New York, via Ward'sScientific (Cat. No. W-32)
Collection Date: N/A
Description: The sample from which the powder was derived consists of dark gray tabular plagioclase containing interstitial bluish-green granulated feldspar groundmass, and some opaque areas approx. 1-3 mm in size scattered through the sample.Particle size was 0-75 micrometers. Original ASTER Spectral Library name was jhu.becknic.rock.igneous.mafic.fine.anorth1.spectrum.txt
Compostion:

Petrographic Description: Very coarse-grained sample consisting of
subhedral plagioclase (96%) with some areas showing mortar texture. The
plagioclase groundmass apparently is cryptocrystalline due to granulation.
There are minute scattered amphibole anhedra (0.6%) and 0.7% opaques.
There was no sign of calcite in thin section, nor was the rock analyzed for
CO2, but the spectrum clearly indicates the presence of a small amount of
carbonate.

Microprobe Analysis: Microprobe analysis indicated a range of feldspar
grains and groundmass composition from approx. An10 -An50 (oligoclase-
andesine); various cryptocrystalline amphiboles (either Tschermakite or
hastingsite), opaques high in titanium but also high in silica and lime (a
mixture), and possibly some zoisite. Like most "anorthosites" of the
Adirondacks, average plagioclase composition is andesine. Hence, these
rocks are sometimes classed with lime diorites instead of gabbros and
referred to as "andesinites."
